Some sites do very well with Adsense (even in the millions of dollars a year) while many more sites do extremely poorly with the program (can't even earn $10 a month). One of the misconception people have about Adsense is they simply slap it in their websites and it will automatically earn them big money — which is not true as evidenced by the many disgruntled webmasters
Your income will depend on:
- the topic of your site (if you have high paying keywords you stand to earn more)
- responsiveness of users to ad (are visitors coming to your site with blinders in their eye or do they look at the ads as additional complementary resource)
- traffic (you earn more with more traffic, even if you have low paying keywords or other metrics)
- how you implement the ads on your site (some positions and colors work better than others)
As for the topics, think of websites where:
- Visitors are responsive to the ads. Entertainment and gaming sites, even forums, typically do not work well with Adsense because their visitors are looking to play games, chat with others and read about the latest on Paris Hilton — and ignore ads in the process.
Travel websites where you provide the information about a certain city and the ads shown are about hotel deals, airfare, luggages, etc — all necessary to go to that place — then your site will do well with Adsense
- Topics where people are looking to spend money. Product review sites do extremely well, because your site provides the info on the latest MP3 players, for example, and the visitors you attract are those that ACTIVELY looking to buy the latest MP3 players.
So topics such as mortgage information, even home business opportunities, do really well with Adsense because the visitors are looking to spend money

The sites that are supposed to do well are:
- insurance
- mortgages
- gambling
- "Adult"
These tend to change quite often as other areas come up (for example holidays used to be very lucrative).
As far as ebooks, simply put the term Free Adsense ebook into Google and you'll get plenty. Can't recomend any.
